"We do," David said cautiously. "The Varna people. Six thousand years old."


Dobri spat into the dust and shook his head, smiling with yellowed teeth. "Older than that, maybe. My grandfather... he used to tell us stories when we were boys. Before the Communists, before the Tsars, even before the Turks."


David smiled mildly, playing along. "Local legends?"


"Not legend," Dobri insisted softly. "History of the valley. He said our people—the old families of these hills—are descended from the Sky-Sowers. The ones who came from the sunken land. Atlantis, the city people call it. But my grandfather called it the Shining Place across the fog. Greg Anderson didn't answer. He dropped to his knees, thrusting his hands into the soil. He pulled up a handful of earth. It was cool, damp, and smelled of undisturbed humus and ancient rot.


"We need to check the perimeter," David said, his voice flat with shock.

The entire faculty sat in the darkened observatory, waiting for her report.

A month passed. The initial shock gave way to the harsh, practical realities of survival.


The scientists of Revelation were not helpless. They were twenty-four of the brightest scientific minds of their generation, backed by their families, living in a compound stocked with hand tools, chemical reagents, seeds, medical supplies, and vast libraries of physical, printed books.


They learned to operate the geothermal pumps manually, rigging mechanical levers to draw freshwater from the earth. The botanists converted the ornamental gardens into hyper-efficient organic crops. The zoologists domesticated wild tarpans and managed small herds of game.


They had built a town. Now, they had to live in it.


Two months after the Arrival, a scout team led by David Simcox crested a ridge three miles east of the compound, near the shores of the giant coastal lake.


Through his binoculars, David saw them.

As if on cue, a group of three local hunters emerged from the treeline below. They carried simple ash-wood spears tipped with knapped flint.


When the hunters saw the modern men standing on the ridge—clad in colorful, synthetic jackets, possessing strange tools of metal and glass—they didn't attack. They didn't run.


They dropped to their knees in the high grass, pressing their foreheads to the earth.


David Simcox walked down the hill alone.


He approached the lead hunter, a young man with dark, sharp eyes and a leather pouch tied at his waist. David held out his hands, palms up, showing he carried no weapons.


The hunter raised his head slowly, looking up at David with an expression of profound, terrified reverence. He looked past David, toward the horizon, where the white, gleaming geodesic domes and glass roofs of Revelation reflected the midday sun like a mountain of pure light.


The hunter spoke a word. It was an ancient, guttural dialect of Proto-Indo-European, raw and unformed.


David didn't understand the words, but he understood the gesture. The hunter was pointing at the shining compound on the hill, then pointing at the sea, then bowing again.


He was asking if they had come from the sky-boat across the great water.


David tried to explain. He sat in the dirt with the young hunter, drawing diagrams with a stick. He drew the solar system. He drew a clock face. He drew a line extending into the future, bending back around in a great, unbroken circle to touch the dirt where they sat. He tried to speak of physics, of time, of the long journey from a world that had not yet been born.


The hunter listened, his dark eyes wide, absorbing the incomprehensible concepts through the lens of his world.


He saw men who came from a city of glass and grey iron that had appeared in a single flash of purple fire. He heard stories of a world of unimaginable power, of light harnessed in quartz, of men who had crossed a vast ocean of years and could never return home.


When David returned to Revelation that evening, he sat on the porch of his house, watching the sun set over the Balkan Mountains.


Greg Anderson sat down beside him, handing him a glass of home-brewed cider made from wild apples.


"How was the contact?" Greg asked softly.

Greg chuckled bitterly. "A shining city on an island across the water. Advanced technology. Fallen from grace in a single day and night of fire and disaster, cut off from the rest of the world forever."


David looked at Greg. The realization struck both men at the exact same moment.


"The myth," David whispered.


"Plato didn't make it up," Greg said, staring out at the darkening valley. "He just heard a six-thousand-year-old game of telephone. Passed down from these hunters, to their children, to the early Greeks. The story of the strange, brilliant people who lived in the shining place, wielded the power of the sun, and were swallowed by time."


"We aren't the scientists who discovered the past," David said, looking up at the ancient, unfamiliar stars shining down on the valley. "We are the catastrophe that started the story."


Three years after the Event, a child was born in Revelation.


His mother was a botanist from Pittsburgh; his father was David Simcox. They named the boy Thomas. He was a healthy, dark-haired child who grew up playing among the silent, dark server racks of the computing center and the high, stone walls built by men from the twenty-first century.


When Thomas was seven, he wandered down to the riverbank with his father.


They met a group of local villagers trading dried fish for forged copper hooks that Revelation’s metallurgists had learned to hammer by hand. Among the villagers was a young man with sharp dark eyes—a leader of his tribe, wearing a shell necklace and carrying a bronze adze forged in Revelation's smithy. Along side him a young girl maybe five years old.


The young man smiled at David, then knelt down and gave the little boy a carved bone pendant.


David looked at his son. He looked at the young leader of the Varna people. He saw the subtle shape of the jaw, the high arch of the brow, the familiar set of the eyes. he looked at the girl then looked at his son.

David Simcox stood up on the bank of the Danube, holding his son’s hand, and looked out over the wild, untamed earth.


"What are you looking at, Dad?" the boy asked, looking up.


David smiled, feeling the warm, ancient wind blowing off the Black Sea.
